Finding a job in a foreign country- Nikolas Mayers

02.04.2019

My name is Nikolas Mayers and I am a 4th year student studying International Business Economics. Since September I have been working in a company called Photoslurp as 1 of 2 interns in lead generation and data analysis. The topic I wanted to discuss was finding a job in a foreign country as an immigrant. This is very personal for me as I am an immigrant entering my third year of living in Barcelona and for some of you, moving somewhere else both inside and outside the EU might be a viable option to find work and I hope it helps.

Immigrating is never easy and it is even more difficult when you leave everything and move somewhere foreign alone as I did. Some of the challenges and things to be aware of:

  • Language Barriers: Not knowing the language can greatly hamper/ restrict potential work options
  • Cultural Differences: This can be seen in how you dress, appear, speak and body language in the interview process where the first impression can go a long way.
  • Legal Processes: Knowing what you need to work or study and live in the desired country.

So, how do you overcome these challenges?? The easiest way is through preparation, especially since almost everyone has a smart phone it is very easy to read up and research all the necessary aspects. Overall, I’m very thankful to UPF and Photoslurp for the opportunities they have afforded to me and would definitely recommend a working stay in a foreign country.
