PRBBUPF2013The Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS), by combining transfer and generation of knowledge, aims to be a reference for Public Universities to deal with the future challenges in Research and High Education. UPF's indicators have made it a benchmark for the Spanish and European university systems. In recent years, the University has begun to figure prominently in some prestigious international rankings.

Our academic studies

The MELIS actively trains future talent in research through undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate studies. We currently coordinate eight master degrees and one international PhD program in Biomedicine. Two of our master degrees (Biomedical Research and Bioinformatics for Health Sciences) and the PhD program Biomedicine are fully developed in English with significant internalization of both students and teaching staff.

The MELIS also develops undergraduate degrees in Human Biology, Medicine and Biomedical Engineering (joint degree with the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, DTIC-UPF).

Alliances

MELIS has made a big effort to establish important strategic alliances with surrounding research institutes affiliated to the UPF such as:

These alliances have allowed us to increase the scientific critical mass of scientists in several areas of research with some of our Faculty members performing their research in these institutes.

Research funding

The MELIS has evolved to achieve excellence and international leadership in Cell and Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Evolutionary Biology and Neurosciences, gathering substantial external funding from competitive sources and research contracts with industry, both national and international, of over 10 million Euros per year. Also, the number of scientific articles produced by the MELIS has beenincreasing to a total of more than 1,000 articles in last 5 years.

Performance Evaluation

Thanks to an international external advisory board, there is a continuous evaluation process of the scientific production of our Faculty, Research groups, Programs, Board of Directors and the Recruitment policies. We think that this constitutes a leading path for public universities if they aim to compete with research institutes for quality on research.
