Awards for Scientific Research into Urban Challenges in the City of Barcelona 2020

These new awards are intended for all members of the scientific community up to the age of 40 and in any branch of knowledge. The main aims are to stimulate and boost Barcelona's young talent, and to provide support for innovative projects that comprehensively rethink the city model.

Research topics

The projects submitted for the call for applications for the award must be for tackling urban challenges during the covid crisis, and fall within the framework of one or several of the following issues in the context of the city of Barcelona and, if necessary, the metropolitan environment:

  • Population density, public space and social well-being
  • Social well-being in relation to housing and basic services
  • Sustainable mobility of people and products
  • Climate emergency and city
  • Quality ageing, children and city
  • City and visitors
  • New spaces and productive models in the city
  • Sustainable food and city
  • Technology and improving public health services

Awards and conditions

The call has a total budget of 1.2 million euros, which will be distributed among the various winning projects, with awards ranging from 30,000 euros to 100,000 euros.

It is open to projects and research in the fields of social sciences and the humanities, in addition to natural and experimental sciences, the exact and formal sciences and engineering and applied sciences.

The deadline for submitting projects is 9 November 2020. The decision on the winning projects will be published before the end of the year.
