Seminar by Max Mathews

11.12.2006

Max Mathews, the father of Computer Music, will give a seminar on "My memories of the Early Days of Computer Music at Bell Telephone Labs and My Dreams About of the Future of Computer Music".

Abstract:

I will discuss my Bell Labs memories of the early years of my computer music programs Music 1 through Music 5. I will point out concepts in these program which are still important in today’s programs such as Csound and Max-MSP. I will describe the Groove real-time performance system, and early computer synthesized films. I will illustrate my memories with sound and video files. I will then dream aloud about a possible future which includes laptop orchestras, the computer as an addition to conventional orchestras, and the computer as an amateur musician’s instrument and joy. I will speculate on the eternal problem of creating new timbres which charm the human ear and brain as do the timbres of traditional instruments. I will speculate that progress in this domain will be best done by the combined efforts of composers and experimental psychologists.
