Two PhD positions at the MTG to do research on AI and Music Education

The Music Technology Group of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona opens two funded PhD positions to do research on signal processing and machine learning methods to support musical instrument learning.

23.01.2020

Supervisor: Xavier Serra

Starting date: September 2020

The objective of the research is to develop technologies with which to support the learning of a musical instrument, technologies that should analyze a performance of a musical exercise or piece and give feedback to a student on the playing accuracy, musicality, and learning progress.

These PhD theses will be done in the context of the research being carried out in the Audio Signal Processing Lab of the MTG, thus in close collaboration with the rest of the members of the Lab. The theses should contribute to the development of new audio processing, symbolic score processing, and/or machine learning methodologies, and they should be based on strong music education knowledge and practical objectives.

What we are looking for:

  • A strong background in Computer Science (mainly Audio Signal Processing, Statistical Analysis, and Machine Learning)
  • A strong background and interest in music and music education
  • A completed (by Sept. 2020) master’s degree in computer science or a related field (preferably with a thesis that documents your existing expertise in music technology)

The succesful candidates will enroll in the PhD program of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies of the UPF. Practical and administrative information about the PhD program, including admission requirements, are available in here

Interested people should send a CV, a motivation letter, and a first draft of a thesis proposal detailing a possible research plan, to [email protected]. For any further information you can contact directly Xavier Serra.
