Research positions at the MTG

The MTG is looking to hire two researchers to start in January 2018.

 

1. Junior Researcher position.
This position will involve working at MTG-UPF in Barcelona to develop music recommendation algorithms based on audio signal processing, metadata, and machine learning techniques in collaboration with engineers from Kakao. Kakao owns Melon, which is the largest online music service in South Korea.

Required skills/qualifications:

  • Master degree in Computer Science or equivalent,  with 2+ years of practical experience
  • Experience in machine learning, music information retrieval and/or recommender systems
  • Proficiency in scientific programming using Python
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English
  • Ability to work and deliver autonomously while being a part of a team

Preferred skills/experience:

  • Master degree in Sound and Music Computing, Music Technology, or related field
  • Experience in algorithms for music recommender systems
  • Experience using Essentia and AcousticBrainz, or similar software and datasets
  • Experience in research on large-scale datasets
  • Experience in deep learning
  • Proficiency in Linux including scripting
  • Demonstrable ability to produce academic publications

 

2. Junior research/developer position.
This position will involve working at MTG-UPF in Barcelona to develop signal processing and machine learning algorithms for automatic quality assessment and semantic annotation of music audio in the context of digital music distribution systems in collaboration with La Cupula Music.

Required skills/qualifications:

  • Master degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or or equivalent,  with 2+ years of practical experience
  • Experience in design and development of music audio signal analysis, processing, and classification algorithms
  • Proficiency in software development using C++, Python, and Git
  • Experience in Linux, including scripting
  • Ability to work and deliver autonomously while being a part of a team

Preferred skills/experience:

  • Master degree in Sound and Music Computing, Music Technology or related field
  • Experience developing audio signal processing algorithms in an industrial context
  • Experience using Essentia or similar audio analysis software
  • Being passionate about writing clean code

The Music Technology Group (MTG) of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, part of its Department of Information and Communication Technologies, carries out research on topics such as audio signal processing, music information retrieval, musical interfaces, and computational musicology. The MTG wants to contribute to the improvement of the information and communication technologies related to sound and music, carrying out competitive research at the international level and at the same time transferring its results to society. To that goal, the MTG aims at finding a balance between basic and applied research while promoting interdisciplinary approaches that incorporate knowledge and methodologies from both scientific/technological and humanistic/artistic disciplines.
