Two funded PhD positions to work at the MTG

The MTG of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona opens two funded PhD positions to start on September 2019.

PhD position 1: Identification of musical patterns from audio corpora

The objective of the research is to first automatically discover musically meaningful features from music corpora that can characterize specific music styles and then, using the results, develop educational tools to improve listening abilities for music comprehension and appreciation.

This work should build on the music corpora and research results of the CompMusic project, focusing on specific music styles and specific listening tasks to be defined. The thesis should contribute to the development of new audio processing and pattern analysis methodologies, and it should be based on strong music theory and music cognition knowledge.

 

PhD position 2: Automatic assessment of performed musical exercises

The objective of the research is to analyze audio recordings of musical exercises to identify musically meaningful features and then, using the results, automatically assess the performances based on rubrics specified by teachers.

This work should build of the work done within the TECSOME project, in particular the Music Critic system. The thesis should contribute to the development of new audio processing and machine learning methodologies, and it should be based on strong music education knowledge.

 

Candidates should be able to demonstrate a background and prior research experience on the topics relevant for the position being applied for.
