Freesound is the biggest website for sharing Creative Commons audio clips in the world. It contains all sorts of sounds, from field recordings to music instrument samples, foley, speech and music loops. The aim of Freesound is to provide audio building blocks to be transformed and combined into other sounds, and reused elsewhere.

Freesound can also be integrated in third party applications. Using the Freesound API researchers and developers can access Freesound content a retrieve meaningful sound information such as metadata, analysis files and the sounds themselves. Freesound API usage is free for non-commercial use, but it can also be licensed for being used in commercial applications.

A very important aspect that has made the Freesound project sustainable has been the continuous contribution of new sounds by the user community. These sounds give Freesound a value and make it a useful resource for many users around the world. During the year 2019, 41,450 new sounds corresponding to 772 hours of audio were uploaded to the platform.  In total, Freesound currently hosts a total of 441,075 sounds. Creative applications like Freesound Timeline allows to explore the recordings by year.

Another important figure is the number dowloads in 2019: 20,624,811. That represents 1.6M more downloads than the previous year.  And in total, users have downloaded more than 149M sounds from Freesound.
