Guest lecture about Catalan research project on the subjective well-being of children at the class Children, Youth and the Media

19.03.2019

On the 7th of March 2019, at the class Children, Youth and the Media, guest speaker Mari Corominas gave a presentation of the research project ‘The Children Have Their Say: The Subjective Wellbeing of Children in Barcelona’.

The project was led by Institut Infancia Adolescencia, a Catalan public agency devoted to providing knowledge to accompany local authorities in their role as guarantors of the rights of children and adolescents and to transform the city to make it a more suitable setting for childhood and adolescence.

The research focussed on rights based on the convention of the rights of the child, and not only were children the main subject, they were also used as:

  • Key informants, by answering a survey that asked about their life and wellbeing;

  • Researchers, by letting them help with the interpretation of the results, and;

  • Action takers, by having them involved in creating the recommendations.

The results of the research stated that while 69% of Barcelona children are totally satisfied with their lives, 31% said they were not sufficiently happy, and 8% even responded that they were not very or not happy at all.

The research was further divided by specific categories, and mostly free time, freedom, student life, how to use time and how adults listen to them scored relatively low (between 38% and 53% marked as not satisfied).

Based on the results, the children have compiled 11 recommendations/demands for a better life. Among those 11 were less time studying, more time with friends, to feel safer and more secure and receive more support when they have problems.
