Guest lecture by Political Journalism Professor Xavier Giró at the MA 'International Studies on Media, Power and Difference'

11.02.2019

On 6th February 2019, Xavier Giró held a guest talk on Critical Discourse Analysis at the Master’s in International Studies on Media, Power and Difference. He is professor of Political Journalism at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), director of the Observatori de la Cobertura de Conflictes (OCC) and co-director of the postgraduate diploma course 'Communication of conflicts and peace'.

Professor Giró talked about 'Critical Discourse Analysis' (CDA) in order to give students a usable approach for their Master's Thesis later this year. He emphasized that CDA is not a specific method, but rather an approach to investigate a written or verbal discourse of a certain actor or actors. More specifically, Professor Giró is specialized in analysing the coverage of conflicts, and he talked extensively about the different ways to do such an analysis.
