Real-world benefits through virtual lighting fixtures
MAX-R opens up opportunities to develop tools that support critical operations across the production pipeline through the integration of reliable and accurate metadata. One area that ARRI is exploring is the application of virtual camera and lighting fixtures to bring marked benefits to all types of production, from classic studio through to virtual and xR environments.
ARRI’s digital twin solutions utilize accurate models and metadata from set to accelerate procedures throughout the production pipeline. The plugin, developed for Unreal Engine 5, contains 3D data of ARRI's physical lighting fixtures and their accessories. Light characteristics, shadows, and color science are replicated, and a DMX interface allows the virtual fixture to be controlled in the exact same way as the physical hardware.
Benefits include streamlined visualization, integration into on-set workflows, and facilitating quicker adjustments, all of which support smoother and more efficient production processes.
Initial deployment of the software on upcoming projects has yielded positive feedback, particularly for its impact on enhancing communication and collaboration between the art, camera, and production departments.
