Resum:

In this talk, I will draw on my work on small stories on social media as a synthesis of corpusassisted critical discourse, socio-material & social-interactional approaches to online subjectivities (for details of my project see www.ego-media.org). I will specifically examine the links between Stories as designed features on apps (mainly Instagram and Snapchat) and specific, algorithmically manipulated and curated identities for the users. Stories, I will show, are a site of mismatches between a promised continuity in self-presentation, personalization and user creativity on the one hand and, on the other hand, the economy of the apps’ branding of sharing-lives-in-the-moment. This re-designation of stories as a primarily visual, commoditized and metricized mode of sharing daily life, I will argue, has profound implications for the kinds of selves and identity-projects that become widely available through ‘influencers’ and other media affordances of scaling up.
