Stephen Jacobson is a professor (catedràtic contractat) in modern history and director of the doctoral program. Previously, he served as the director of the Institut d'Història Jaume Vicens Vives and coordinator of the Master’s in World History. Before coming to the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, he was a lecturer at King's College London and an adjunct professor at the University of New Hampshire. He received his Ph.D. from Tufts University (1998) and his J.D. and M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania (1991).

Professor Jacobson’s recent research concerns popular and rogue republicanism in the Atlantic world during the middle of the nineteenth century. He has recently published various articles on this subject, and enjoyed research stays at the Instituto de Historia Argentina y Americana Dr. Emilio Ravignani at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. He is the author of Catalonia's Advocates: Lawyers, Society, and Politics in Barcelona, 1759-1900 (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2009) and the co-editor of Endless Empire: Spain's Retreat, Europe's Eclipse, America's Decline (Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 2012).  He is currently working on a book that explores a microhistory of imposture between Barcelona and Argentina.
