  • The Master in Global Archaeology is a new programme, admitting students for the next academic year starting in September 2020. The vision of the Master is to nurture professionals and researchers interested in analysing and interpreting the main problems of today's world -both globally and locally- from an archaeological perspective.

    Remarkable in its breadth and interdisciplinary crossovers, this new programme allows you to learn theories and methods within the field of Archaeology and develop your career in the professional world or in academic research. This Master programme also allows you to acquire experience of an unparalleled range of themes and analytical methods and, not common in such programmes, it stimulates relations between archaeological science, material culture studies and social archaeology.

    The master is an official degree of the Spanish university system.

• Who is it for?

  • The master's degree is aimed primarily at graduate students in the fields of Art and Humanities as well as Social and Legal Sciences (or similar degrees outside the Spanish system) who are curious to learn new things in different ways, to apply their critical skills and to share their own knowledge. We actively encourage diversity and tailor our training to challenge you and build on your own strengths.

• Syllabus

  • To be awarded the final degree you must pass all courses and complete a dissertation. The taught courses, which are all compulsory, are worth a total of 42 credits and are assessed by coursework in different forms (readings and discussion, essays, presentations, and small projects among others); the Practicum (a period of in house research or professional practices with an affiliated institution) is worth 5 credits. Provided you attained the required standard, you will be able to develop individual research starting in the second trimester and specifically during the third trimester that will result in a final dissertation worth a further 13 credits.

• Admission requirements

  • COMPULSORY DOCUMENTS

    In order to be admitted to the Master's Degree in Global Archaeology candidates must submit the following documents:

    • Official undergraduate degree/diploma (or a bachelor's degree, a degree in engineering or architecture, diplomas, technical engineering and technical architecture diplomas, or, for foreign qualifications, the equivalent qualification awarded by an accredited higher education institution). Qualifications can be in the following academic areas: Social Sciences and Law, Humanities, Scientific-natural sciences or Biology.
    • Academic transcript of the accredited official training with the average grade at the university of origin.
    • Proof of English language (level B2). Check accepted certificates for English courses.
    • Proof of Spanish language (level B2). Check accepted certificates for Spanish courses.
    If you can't submit an official certificate to proof your language level due to the Covid-19 lockdown, you can take an online level test through the UPF School of Languages
    • Curriculum Vitae in English or Spanish.
    • A letter of motivation in English or Spanish, stating the candidate's interest in following the master's programme (400 to 600 words).
    • Two (professional or academic) letters of recommendation signed by someone who really knows the candidate and can assess them.
    • Identity Card or Passport. 

     

    OPTIONAL DOCUMENTS

    If you want to improve your candidacy you might consider including further documentation concerning:

    • Professional experience in any of the fields related to the master's programme.
    • Research experience.
    • Teaching experience.
    • Additional academic training in areas related to the master's programme.
    • Additional professional experience.

    In addition, the Department's selection committee may decide to interview the candidate.

    INSTRUCTIONS

    • If the diploma or the academic transcript are not written in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Portuguese or Italian, you will also have to include the respective sworn translations into Catalan or Spanish.
    • if you have not yet completed your undergraduate studies when formalising application, instead of the Official undergraduate degree/diploma and Academic transcript, you will need to provide: a signed declaration of obtaining the diploma before the start of the academic year and a copy of the provisional undergraduate transcript.
    • In case you would like to be exempted from accrediting any language because you are a native speaker or you have studied in that language, it is necessary for you to upload a brief letter justifying the reasons why you request to be exempted from this requirement. Applying students can also prove their language skills with an interview (in person or via Skype).
    • In order to optimise the treatment and security of the recommendation letters, you will have to request those via the online application system, where you will need to indicate the e-mail adress of the person/the persons you wish to be recommended by. That person will receive an e-mail indicating that you have requested a recommenation letter from him/her. The letter will be uploaded by the referee in the online application system. Non-institutional addresses such as *yahoo, *gmail, *hotmail, etc... will not be accepted.

• Internships

  • For the deveopment of the Practicum course the student can also consider external institution such as local museums, foundations or heritage sites. The Master's administration will work closely with students so that they can explore and understand the available possibilities.

  • The Master in Global Archaeology is designed to refine your current skills and to develop new ones so that you will be able to pursue your interests and your personal/professional development. The programme and its teaching methodologies are tailored to make you a critical thinker, knowledgeable and able to analyse complex evidence, and to present your ideas in an articulate and accessible way, both orally and in writing. These are skills highly valued by employers, opening the way to many careers as a graduate.

• Continuing your studies

  • This master's program allows students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to start their doctoral studies in the field of archaeology. UPF offers the possibility to continue to a doctoral work in the Department of Humanities through the PhD in History (which in Spain often includes Archaeology).
