New paper on the effects of COVID-19 inequalities on children

The new paper, “Impact of COVID-19 inequalities on children: An intersectional analysis”, published in the Sociology of Health & Illness journal, explores the effects of COVID-19 on mental health, learning, and well-being on children due to the varying policy restrictions.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for different social groups as it became an ecological, economic, social, cultural, and gender crisis. However, at the societal level, the effects of the pandemic have focused mostly on the most affected groups such as the elderly and health workers, with less focus on the effects on other populations such as children.

For the authors, Gabriel Lemkow-Tovías, Louis Lemkow, Lucinda Cash-Gibson, Ester Teixidó-Compañó, and Joan Benach, “an important challenge is to understand the complex social determinants that can influence the health and well-being of children in this enduring crisis and how these may vary by different social groups. This is relevant to understand better the long-term implications of the pandemic for children, where their main supporting and safety networks have been placed under immense pressure.”

Given the above, this article seeks to analyze the social influences of the COVID-19 crisis on children’s health and well-being, based on a conceptual framework that they developed, which takes into consideration the structural determinants (socioeconomic and political context, axes of inequality) and the intermediary determinants (family and household circumstances, schools and nurseries, socio-environmental matters and neighborhoods, media and digital resources).

The researchers point out the need for a more profound and comprehensive analysis of the short-, mid-and long-term impacts of the multidimensional COVID-19 crisis on children’s health and well-being, with a dynamic intersectional approach.
