UPF is in first place among Spanish public universities in the overall ranking of scientific output, according to a study carried out by researchers at the University of Granada, led by Gualberto Buela -Casal. Pablo Olavide University in Seville and Miguel Hernández University in Elche were in second and third place.

The other Catalan public universities are also in good positions, and mostly in the top ten. The Autonomous University of Barcelona and Rovira i Virgili University completed the top five in the ranking.

The study methodology classifies universities according to each of the indicators assessed: publications and citations in journals (4.19); research sections (3.95), participation in R&D projects (3.90), doctoral theses submitted (3.47), training grants to university lecturers per year (3.02), number of doctorates with an Excellence Mention (3,02) and patents (2.67). The brackets show the weight of each indicator in the calculation of overall scientific output.

UPF leads three specific criteria

Of the seven indicators analyzed, Pompeu Fabra University is in first place in three, and ranks second in two others. UPF is particularly successful in the number of publications and citations in scientific journals in 2012, the number of R&D projects in 2012 and the number of doctoral theses submitted between 2006 and 2011. It ranks second in the number of training grants awarded to university lecturers and the number of doctorates with an Excellence Mention.
