International workshop, “Intersections between Gender and Genres in Medieval

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam”

This two-day workshop has been organized within the framework of the research
project, RELGEND (PGC2018-093472-B-C32, FEDER/MICIU/AEI; PI: Linda G.
Jones) with two broad aims in mind: to explore the intersections between religion and
gender in premodern Judaism, Christianity, and Islam through the analysis of diverse
textual genres and to evaluate the transcultural aspects of the religion-gender dynamic.
Since the 1990s, the gender dimension has become well integrated into premodern
Jewish Studies, Islamic Studies, and Medieval European History. Yet the disparities in
the historiographical trajectories and the great diversity of primary sources invite more
systematic comparisons among the three religious cultures with respect to definitions of
gender identities and distinctions, as well as a reevaluation of the state-of-art of gender
studies within each discipline. How and to what extent does the genre of a source
inform the conceptualization and representations of gender? What are the best
methodological practices to approach the intertwined relations between the three
religions, historical subjects (Jews, Christians, and Muslims) and scholarly disciplines
from the perspective of gender? The workshop will address these and other questions
using three formats: paper presentations of case-study research, a colloquium featuring
three invited scholars (Katherine Lewis, Ruth Mazo Karras, and Zahra Ayubi) who will
discuss the evolution of gender studies within their respective fields, and a roundtable
discussion on methodology and new directions in comparative gender studies.
