Since September 2018, Zenia Hellgren is Marie Curie Research Fellow at GRITIM-UPF. Her research project REPCAT (The Role of the Ethnic Majority in Integration Processes: Attitudes and Practices towards Immigrants in Catalan Institutions) examines how diversity is represented and what barriers there are for participation of immigrants and minorities in Catalan public institutions, based on the assumption that underrepresentation of ethnic diversity hampers integration processes and cements inequality as minority groups lack both voice and visibility in society.
The project is designed to cover both a resarch stage and an implementation stage: i) to increase knowledge on diversity management and obstacles for participation of immigrants in societal institutions; and ii) to develop action strategies intended to increase the actual participation and representation of immigrants in these institutions. It is based on the view that research on social challenges as inequality and discrimination to a greater extent should contribute to combat these problems through practical implementation.
Three central institutions have been selected for the empirical study: the Catalan public school system, the Catalan police force (Mossos d’Esquadra), and the political administration of Barcelona (Ajuntament de Barcelona). The methods applied will mainly be content analysis of documents issued by these institutions and interviews with their representatives.
