Ricard Zapata-Barrero was one of the key speakers of the plenary session "Baku Process – Advancing Intercultural Dialogue for Human Security, Peace and Sustainable Development: 10 Years Lessons and Perspectives" at the VI Baku International Humanitarian Forum. This session was moderated by Mr. Abulfas Garayev, the Minister of the Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and was led by the Deputy Director of UNESCO, the Director General of ISESCO, the Director of Inter-Civilizations Dialogue Department of the League of Arab States, the Deputy Executive Director of North-South Center of the Council of Europe, the former Director of Culture, Cultural and Natural Heritage Council of Europe, among others.

The aim of the Baku Process is to develop and foster dialogue between the Islamic and Western civilisations, by placing intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity higher on the international agenda as a critical element for achieving human security and as a prime responsibility of our time. 

"Since 2011, in the frame of the Baku Process, Azerbaijan hosted the four World Forums on Intercultural Dialogue in partnership with UN Alliance of Civilizations, UNESCO, World Tourism Organization, the Council of Europe and ISESCO and Baku International Humanitarian Forums as well as UN Alliance of Civilizations 7th Global Forum 2016." Professor Zapata-Barrero is also a member of the Expert Preparatory Group of the 5th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue 2019, convened by the Republic of Azerbaijan and UNESCO.

This forum was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, during the 25th and 26th of October 2018, and was under the theme of "Shaping a New World and a New Humanity: Creativity and Human Development".
