Swagata Basu is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at Doon University, Dehradun and a PhD candidate at Centre for European Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She holds an M.Phil, BA and MA in Spanish Philology from JNU. Her M.Phil thesis was on ‘Multiculturalism in Spanish Immigration Cinema between 1990-2010’. She is part of MELILF project (Migration and Everyday Life in Iberian Literature and Film) based at Universita Ca’ Foscari, Venice.
Her PhD topic is “Language and Integration in Spain: a Case Study of Catalonia”. She is studying Spain’s linguistic diversity and language policy. She seeks to understand the relationship between language policy and integration of diverse groups in Spain and its autonomous communities. She will utilize her stay at Gritim-UPF to understand the role of language in the sense of identity and belonging among immigrants and people with immigrant background in Catalonia by analysing the factors that influence the use of Spanish, Catalan and other languages (language of origin) among immigrants in different contexts.
