Meet the new Steering Committee member: Apostolos Papadopoulos (Harokopio University, Athens, Greece)



Apostolos Papadopoulos is a Professor of Rural Sociology and Geography at the Department of Geography, Harokopio University in Athens. He is also Director of the Institute of Social Research at the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE) in Athens. His background in Sociology and Geography has proved to be important for addressing topics related to socio-spatial relations and economic development. 

He has been a member of the Working Group on Migration coordinated by the Prime Minister Office in Greece (Official Gazette (FEK) Issue 1650/25-08-2011). For four years, he was a member of the Advisory Board (2017-2020) of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), while he was its elected Chair for two years. He was also elected as a member of the Executive Committee and Vice-President of the European Sociological Association (ESA) for two consecutive periods (2017-2019 & 2019-2021), and additionally, he is a member of the board of RN27 Southern European Societies in ESA. Currently, he is Editor-in-Chief of the international peer-reviewed journal Sociologia Ruralis and Associate Editor of the journal NEW MEDIT: Mediterranean Journal of Economics, Agriculture and Environment. He has extensive research and managerial experience in both academia and research institutions, with a particular interest in migration and rural development, and the connections between mobility, inequalities, and spatial organization. More recently, he has been focusing on the social impact of research.
