Brief description of the thesis:

Automatically describing contents of recorded music is crucial for interacting with large volumes of audio recordings, and for developing novel tools to facilitate music pedagogy. Melody is a fundamental facet in most music traditions and, therefore, is an indispensable component in such description. In this thesis, we develop computational approaches for analyzing high-level melodic aspects of music performances in Indian art music (IAM), with which we can describe and interlink large amounts of audio recordings. With its complex melodic framework and well-grounded theory, the description of IAM melody beyond pitch contours offers a very interesting and challenging research topic. We analyze melodies within their tonal context, identify
melodic patterns, compare them both within and across music pieces, and finally, characterize the specific melodic context of IAM, the rāgas. All these analyses are done using data-driven methodologies on sizable curated music corpora. Our work paves the way for addressing several interesting research problems in the field of music information research, as well as developing novel applications in the context of music discovery and music pedagogy.

Experience as a PhD student:

My experience during my PhD was very enriching and fulfilling, both scientifically and socially. It was the first time I travelled out of India, so getting to know different culture, interacting with people from different parts of the world, and staying there for so many years has given me some of my best memories. Research-wise there couldn’t have been a better place for pursuing topics that I wanted to study. The amount of uninterrupted freedom that I got is rarely seen in other research groups. I have learnt so many things from Xavier Serra (my advisor) both professionally and personally, that shall remain with me throughout my life. Overall, it was one of my best periods of my life. With his awesome guidance and support I was able to publish quite well and produce a good research output in four years.

Future projects, how is Riyaz going?

Post PhD I have incorporated a company in India together with my colleague Gopala and my advisor Xavier. We are currently working on developing technologies for facilitating music education, focusing on Singing. Our first product Riyaz has got good traction in Indian markets and within a few months there are more than 60 thousand users with over a million user recordings. In near future we plan to scale our product to include different music traditions and instruments.

I hope it becomes possible for me to do research and development work in music technology all through my life. Missing Barcelona already, all my friends and teachers!
