Thesis brief description:

Over the last three decades, wireless connectivity has transformed from an expensive novelty to an indispensable commodity, just like electricity. It has been forecasted that the number of interconnected devices will increase to 50 billion, while the volume of mobile data traffic will grow 1000-fold soon. This 1000 capacity goal exerts immense pressure on the wireless network operators to improve the capacity (bits per second, b/s, of bandwidth) of the future fifth generation (5G) wireless network. The thesis aims at investigating different forms of frequency reuse and determining their role in solving this physical layer problem. Leveraging the toolkit of stochastic geometry, this dissertation has advanced the interference models for wireless network analysis and established the fundamental limits of wireless communication systems underpinned by spatial frequency reuse and interference suppression. Based on this thesis work, it is found to be beneficial to concentrate on densifying networks and adding more antennas at the transmitters and receivers, and on utilizing the larger bandwidths available at higher frequencies.

Experience as a PhD student:

The DTIC doctoral program at UPF made a significant positive difference in my career. Five years at the Wireless Communications (WiCom) Research Group have been an incredible learning experience, while simultaneously nurturing my research career. I benefited greatly by the outstanding style of research with importance to meaningful research problems of my advisor Prof. Angel Lozano. I had the opportunity to contribute results to several national and international research projects as well as to interact with several exceptional researchers. Thanks to the welcoming and positive support from the DTIC administrative staff in many practical matters, my stay at UPF went smooth. With its great climate, seashore, few mountain stretches and compact size, Barcelona is always a joyful place to live, and work!!
