Ciera Crowell, a PhD candidate in the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at UPF, recently travelled to Melbourne, Australia to present work at the The ACM SIGCHI Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play (CHI PLAY). Her trip was sponsored by a travel grant awarded by the Department of Information and Communication Technologies after winning the EiTIC People’s Choice Award at the Doctoral Student Workshop.

At the conference, Ciera participated in the Doctoral Consortium, where she was able to share work related to her thesis on Full-Body Interaction Technology for Children with Autism. She also presented two short papers. One paper was entitled Variations in Perception of Interpersonal Distance in Virtual Environments for Autism, and dealt with inconsistencies in personal space preferences between neurodiverse populations, which included a comparison study with human partners and humanoid figures in virtual environments. The second short paper, The Role of Context in Play, focused on exploring the variations in user behavior resulting from external contextual elements in virtual environments. Ciera also served as a student volunteer at the conference. “As the first member of my lab to attend the conference, it was a valuable opportunity to show our work in the international community and network with other researchers working with virtual environments,” commented Ciera. “Although we had not participated in the conference in previous years, I was surprised at the number of researchers present who were working
in similar fields.”

Ciera is currently a fourth year PhD student in the Cognitive Media Technologies Group at UPF. She plans to defend her thesis in 2019.
