Flow Phenomena in Biomedicine has been the main thematic of the second VPH Summer School 2017 that finished on Friday, May 26th, after a full week of intensive and productive work.

The summer School has been organized by the CardioFunXion Marie Curie European Industrial Doctorate training network (BCN Med-Tec, DTIC-UPF and Philips) and the VPH Institute. Bart Bijnens, Jérôme Noailly and Mathieu de Craene have been again the coordinators.

This year, we had the pleasure to welcome 14 speakers and 55 attendees, from 25 different international institutions. 30 of the attendees participated to the hands on sessions led by a total of five professors from UPF and Philips.

The Summer School provided a complete overview of state-of-the-art Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) research within the specific thematic of flow phenomena in biomedicine, from basic science and clinical needs, to model applications. As such, the talks covered important subjects, presented by world-class experts, such as cell migrations, artery and airways remodelling, cardiac electrophysiology, complex flows and haemodynamic, functional and dynamic fluid-solid interactions, advanced clinical imaging and decision support systems, and regulation aspects related to modelling.

The key concepts of the methodological and technological framework were presented through illustrative cases and enriched with 15 hours of hands-on sessions in computational fluid dynamics, particle-based simulations and lumped models, under the supervision of senior scientists and engineers.

The everyday scientific talks and practical works took place together with poster sessions that fed the scientific discussions during the afternoon coffee breaks. The best Poster Award, sponsored by Simula was won by Giulia Luraghi with the poster “FSI Model of A Polymeric Aortic Valve: Comparison With Experimental Results And Simulation In A Patient-Specific Aortic Root (G Luraghi, F De Gaetano, ML Costantino, JF Rodriguez Matas, F Migliavacca, W Wu)”.

The best hands-on was also awarded by the UPF-QUAES Chair, and the winners were Lizette Acosta, Simone Ferrari, Marco Castagna, Omar Jarral, Davide Cirillo, Massimiliano Mercuri, Julia Lopez-Guimet and Carlos Ruiz Wills with Simulating different flow regimes in the left atrium by professor Andy L Olivares. Yet, the final presentations of the hands on largely demonstrated that all of the participants did an excellent job!

Undoubtedly, the 2nd VPH Summer School has been a great inspiring experience, for both junior and senior scientists.
