Supporting Teachers as Designers with Community and Learning Analytics: a framework, technology, and case studies

Supervisor: Dr. Davinia Hernández-Leo

26/03/2019

Thesis Brief Description

The notion of teachers as designers of learning environments has emerged with the increasing use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Education. My PhD thesis deals with how to support the collective and inquiry process of teachers as designers in technological environments with the use of data analytics. A Design-Based Research (DBR) methodology was followed to develop and evaluate solutions for teachers. The main thesis contributions are a) the design and evaluation of a community analytics dashboard based on the Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), b) analysis and technological support for data-informed teacher inquiry cycles and c) a collective inquiry framework for teachers as designers.

Experience as a PhD student

My PhD was a great opportunity to grow in a personal and professional level. I interacted with researchers, practitioners and system developers, and my experience was very positive. During these three and half years, I learned from exceptional researchers who guided me through the difficult path to obtain a PhD. I was also involved in research-practice partnerships and projects, and this helped me to apply my research in real contexts such as schools and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). I enjoyed all the activities organized in the ICT Department of UPF and I developed a research network through my participation in international scientific conferences.
