Prof. Jordi Galí distinguished with the Cross of Saint Jordi

Jordi Galí, Professor in the UPF School of Economics and Business and a researcher at the Center for Research in International Economics (CREI), was recently distinguished with the Creu de Sant Jordi award – St George's Cross – granted by the Government of Catalonia. The award ceremony, one of the highest recognitions a person can receive from the Catalan government, will take place on a date close to Sant Jordi day in late April.

The Government distinguished Prof. Galí "for his total contributions to macroeconomics, in particular for the analysis of monetary policy in industrialized economies, the identification and effects of technological shocks, and the estimation of fiscal policy rules for the eurozone countries".

Prof. Galí is one of 30 persons and 15 organizations that will receive the award in 2020, a distinction created 39 years ago with the aim of recognizing persons or entities who have provided outstanding services in Catalonia in civic and cultural fields.

Jordi Galí i Garreta (Barcelona, ​​1961), considered one of the leading figures in new Keynesian macroeconomics, obtained his doctorate in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1989. Since 2001 he has been Professor in the UPF Department of Economics and Business and Senior Researcher at CREI, which he led between 1999 and 2017.

Throughout his career he has been a research professor – at the Barcelona GSE since 2009 – and has been linked to a number of US universities, including New York University and Columbia University where he held various academic positions, and at MIT and Yale as a visiting professor.

He is a regular consultant to the European Central Bank and the Sveriges Riksbank, and a member of several entities and institutions in the field of economics and culture: the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), where between 1999 and 1999 2005 he co-directed the International Macroeconomics Program; the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER); the Econometric Society (which he chaired in 2012); the Research Council of the Deutsche Bundesbank; and in Catalonia, the Institute of Catalan Studies since 2009.

Amongst other awards, Prof. Galí has ​​received the King James I Prize in Economics (2004), the Yrjö Jahnsson Award in Economics (2005), and both the National Research Prize and the Narcís Monturiol Medal from the Government of Catalonia (in 2011 and 2015, respectively). He has won numerous research grants, including two Advanced Grants from the European Research Council (ERC) in 2008 and 2013.
