Abstract: Specific features of population aging in Latin America (LA) could increase the likelihood that the process is occurring in a context of expansion of morbidity with relatively higher prevalence of long-term care needs (LTCN) among elderly people. Three salient aspects of the process in the region are: 1) Speed: while in Europe the aging process took between 150 and 200 years, it takes place in about 40 to 60 years in LA (Chackiel, 1999); 2) High proportion of LA population lives under poor SES; 3) differential factors that have been the main engines of the process of aging: current cohorts of older people in the region have survived to old age largely as a result of improvements in medicine and to a lesser extent due to improvements in living standards (Preston 1980; Palloni and Wyrick 1981). The population of Argentina is one of the oldest in LA. Our estimations show that the prevalence of disability in ADL and IADL among people over 64 is relatively high. More than 1 million people aged 65 and over would need LTC in Argentina and most does not receive the necessary support both formal and informal (Acosta & Monteverde, 2015; Monteverde, Acosta, Tomas y Garay, 2016). In order to estimate the magnitude of the care needed, we propose an indirect method to classify dependents individuals in homogeneous groups based on the Scale of the Spanish Law 39/2006 (Monteverde, Pujol, Alemany y Casasnovas, in progress). The effect of current levels of poverty in Argentina on future healthy-unhealthy life expectancy, will be also discussed (Monteverde, Guillem and Tomas, in progress).
