"Pension adequacy standards: Consumption, well-being, and health before and after retirement"

Abstract:

Due to increasing life expectancy pension benefits and savings need to last longer, which casts doubt on the financial security of retirees. Surprisingly, what pension benefit level can be considered adequate remains unclear. We discuss existing methods and propose a new approach for estimating pension adequacy standards. We present results based on data on consumption and well-being from the U.S. and Germany, applying a range of econometric estimation techniques. For the U.S., we also show how pension adequacy depends on health and other covariates.
