Pride and Prejudice: A Stereotype-Content-Model Study on Young People's Perception of Social Media Subgroups

13.09.2021

On the occasion of the 12th Conference of the Media Psychology Division of the German Psychological Association (DGPs) that was held between the 8th and 10th of September 2021, the COURAGE team presented first results of a quantitative study among young people, who were asked to evaluate different social groups along the lines of the Stereotype Content Model. Participants were confronted with group labels (women, immigrants, managers, influencer etc.) and asked how these groups are generally perceived in society with regard to, e.g. their level of warmth, intelligence, status, competence and how much these groups compete with other groups. Results of the study should provide a clearer picture of which groups face negative reactions (envy, hate, etc.) and are therefore more likely to be victims of cyberaggression.

The research team comprised doctoral students and research intern supervised by Prof. Dr. Sabrina Eimler. The conference was held in a hybrid format, with mainly poster contributions. Watch the teaser video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otNTn0Jblgc
