Makers from Barcelona joined UPF researchers to design the social media of the future

04.07.2022

A group of followers of the maker of culture joined the Maker Faire Barcelona 2022 at the Pompeu Fabra University. For this occasion, researchers of the TIDE research group offered a light version of the Courage workshops to disseminate some scientific outputs as well as to design in collaboration the “Social Media of the future”.

Can we expect a more ethical social media in the future? This is a typical question as well as a social dilemma in our growing digital cultures. To confront the biggest challenges, a group of participants joined the workshop “Design the Social Media of the Future” as part of the 2022 edition of the Maker Faire Barcelona.

The event took place at the Poblenou campus of the Pompeu Fabra University. It was organized by researchers from the TIDE research group, Emily Theophilou, René Lobo,  Roberto Sánchez-Reina. Participants from different countries joined this venue and worked together in a prototyped social media: a more ethical and sustainable platform.

The Makers Faire is an annual event of invention and digital creativity applied to addressing and solving the challenges of society. It brings together hundreds of "garage handles" or simply curious people of any age (engineers, artists, designers, hackers, craftsmen, programmers, scientists). The first Maker Faire was born in 2006 in San Francisco. Today, hundreds of maker fairs are organized around the world, with more than 2,000,000 participants.
