Each year the Girls’ Day initiative invites schoolgirls to explore interesting topics in STEM-fields. This year, the different courses have been held virtually. Lena Hilbig and Veronica Schwarze, members of the COURAGE team around Prof. Dr. Sabrina Eimler, offered a course together with the group’s research interns Merle Siepmann, Bengt Escher and Thassia Lobermeier.
The 4 hour course "Show COURAGE - Fighting Lies, Hate Speech and Prejudice in Social Media using AI and Minigames” provided playful insights into the role of algorithms and AI in the context of toxic content in Social Media, gamification and filter bubbles. Guided by the instructor team, the girls conceptualised their own minigames that should help to sensitise young people for negative content and sharing dynamics. They also learned how professionals design and programme such applications to use them for intervention and prevention purposes.
