The first Transgang Training Seminar of the year 2021 discusses the social and institutional construction of the gang phenomenon in four European cities –Milan, Marseille, Madrid, Barcelona– exploring the different articulations between youth, migration, citizenship and politics.
The ongoing research presented does not pursue an impossible mechanical comparison between the four cities. On the contrary, they try to make visible the resonances, circulations and frictions between global processes and local fabrications around gangs and youth. In this perspective, the research highlights work on cross-cutting elements that, with different intensities, articulate the evolution of the phenomenon and the gang discourse in the contexts of analysis. It includes the following presentations:

Luca Queirolo
Luca Queirolo Palmas is Professor in Sociology of Migration and Visual Sociology at Genoa University. Co-director of Mondi Migranti, the Italian Review on International Migration, he also founded the Laboratory for Visual Sociology devoted to spread visual forms of narrative and research in social sciences. He directed several European projects on gangs, youth cultures and migrations. He has been visiting professor in Barcelona, Quito, Paris and Tunis. The last books he wrote are: After Revolution. Youth landscape and gender gazes in contemporary Tunisia (Verona, Ombre Corte, 2017); ¿Cómo se construye un enemigo público? las «bandas latinas» (Madrid, traficantes de sueños, 2017).
Eduard Ballesté
Eduard Ballesté Isern has a PhD in Social Anthropology (University of Lleida, Department of Geography and Sociology, 2017), a degree in Geography and Territory Planning (University of Lleida, 2010) and a MA in International Cooperation and Development (University of Lleida, 2012). He has been a visiting researcher at the Universidad Austral de Chile (2017). His fields of interest are: social and political movements, international cooperation, social inequality and segregation, globalization, political anthropology, youth groups, activism, youth and politics. He has participated in different national research projects (GENIND and GARJUVE) and international research projects (CRIC and SAHWA). He has co-edited the book What was the Indignant Spring? Social movements, youth and politics in three continents (Editorial Milenio, 2018) with José Sánchez García and Carles Feixa.
María Oliver
Maria is a predoctoral researcher who collaborates in TRANSGANG project as Fieldwork Support Researcher in Madrid (Spain). A former member of the ALKQN, she combines her personal experience with her academic studies both in education and gender fields. Among her fields of study are Intercultural education; Gender Violence in youth street groups and Memory in youth street groups. Graduated in English Studies at National University of Distance Learning (UNED). Master on Teacher Training, English Speciality, Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), also has taken courses on Gender and Equality and Prevention and intervention with Women victims of Gender Violence (Centro de Postgrado Y Formación continua (UAM).
Juan Camilo Mansilla
PhD in Information and Communication Sciences from the Sorbonne Paris Cité University. Member of JOVIS.com, research group on youth, society, and communication (Spain). Member of the research laboratory Cultural Industries and Artistic Creation–Labex ICCA (France). Since 2017, he has been a research associate at House of Social Sciences–Paris Nord, leading international cooperation on the issues of intergenerational cities, technology, and social inclusion in the digital age. He was the Principal Investigator of COMMIC project (www.projectcommic.com) (2015-2018) funded by Labex ICCA, exploring the social impact of intergenerational video game design experiences in retirement homes. In 2016, he was awarded a Professorship at the School of Communication at the University of São Paulo (USP) in “Media for social change: young people in marginalized areas of SP”. He has been a visiting scholar in Berkeley, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and Seoul.
Paolo Grassi
Paolo Grassi is currently post-doc fellow at the Polytechnic, University of Milan and lecturer in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Padua and at the Academy of Fine Arts of Verona. Paolo is a social anthropologist (PhD, University of Verona, and Masters, University of Milano Bicocca), with a specialisation in development (he has a second Masters in Development Project Management from the University of Milan). He also worked as a youth worker, a teacher, and a project manager assistant. Over the past ten years, he developed interests in issues relating to urban segregation, violence and insecurity, as well as the dynamics of slums and gated communities. He carried out ethnographic research in the Dominican Republic, in Guatemala and in Italy.
