“Gang” conflict mediation is a central theme of the TRANSGANG research programme. In this seminar the TRANSGANG researcher Adam Brisley will set out how work on the question of mediation will be conducted and the theoretical framing that will be used to guide the analysis of empirical data.

The primary aim of the Mediation Experience Project is to develop a White Paper of recommendations for practitioners and policy makers. To achieve this, the project has three secondary objectives:

1) to conduct a “scoping exercise” of governmental responses to gang conflict in the 12 TRANSGANG field sites;

2) to collate ethnographic materials concerning informal and institutionally led mediation experiences from across the TRANSGANG dataset and to conduct additional fieldwork around emergent examples of mediation; and

3) to develop a critical perspective on gang conflict mediation by situating policies and practices in a broader political and socio-economic context. Javier Rodríguez Menés will comment on the tools and perspectives presented.
