Congratulations to Marco Baroni for two nominations and one ACL Test of Time Award

Congratulations to Marco Baroni, COLT member, for obtaining an ACL Test-of-Time Award, that “recognizes the authors of an influential paper published ten years ago that has significantly impacted research or applications in the NLP field”. Marco and his co-author, Alessandro Lenci, obtained the award for the paper “Distributional Memory: A general framework for corpus-based semantics”, published in the Computational Linguistics journal in 2010. The awarding committee highlighted the fact that it is “pioneering work in advocating for general-purpose learned representations of lexical semantics, as words in context”; that it “proposed self-supervised pre-training”, a procedure that has later become generalized in the field with more modern techniques; that it “included extensive experiments” testing different semantic phenomena, as opposed to previous work that typically focused on a single phenomenon (this broader testing has also been adopted in later work); and that it “fostered synergies between computational semantics, cognitive modelling, and linguistic theory”. Finally, the committee described it as a “tour de force in scholarship”; the paper is arguably an example of a very complete piece of research, with impactful theoretical, methodological, and empirical contributions.

Also of special mention is the fact that another paper of Marco’s, co-authored with Roberto Zamparelli, was among the three papers shortlisted for the prize: “Nouns are vectors, adjectives are matrices: Representing adjective-noun constructions in semantic space”, published in Proceedings of EMNLP also in 2010.

We wish to also point out that these two papers have been very influential not only in the computational linguistics community at large, but also specifically for several of the COLT members, contributing to the research foundations upon the group is built.
