Instructional texts, such as articles in wikiHow, describe the actions necessary to accomplish a certain goal. In wikiHow and other community-edited resources, articles are subject to revision edits on a regular basis. In general, such edits are likely to represent improvements to an article. Yet, it is unclear what exactly the function of each edit is (e.g. factual correction, stylistic refinement or textual clarification) and in how far relevant linguistic characteristics (e.g., spelling/grammar mistakes, ambiguities, empty elements) can be modeled computationally.

In this talk, I introduce a collection of revision histories for about 246,000 wikiHow articles. Based on this data set, I discuss human annotation studies on categorizing sentence-level edits as well as preliminary experiments on determining whether and when such edits can be predicted automatically. The talk concludes with a brief discussion of where current computational models fail and how these failures may affect research directions for future work.
