Place Branding Workshop 2016

On Friday, 25th of November 2016 the first edition of the “Place Branding Workshop” took place at the Department of Communication at the Pompeu Fabra University. The workshop started with an official welcome ceremony held by the head of the Department of Communication and member of the CAS (Communication, Advertising and Society) research group José Fernandez-Cavia.

On Friday, 25th of November 2016 the first edition of the “Place Branding Workshop” took place at the Department of Communication at the Pompeu Fabra University. The workshop started with an official welcome ceremony held by the head of the Department of Communication and member of the CAS (Communication, Advertising and Society) research group José Fernandez-Cavia. As an introduction to the workshop Fernandez-Cavia talked about the increased importance of place branding and destination branding due to current developments in the area.

On the next session PhD Laura Perez presented the MINECO and the iTourist project. She gave insights into the main objectives of the research and the methodologies used to investigate the study goals. Following, UPF visting scholar Natalia Ferrer Roca explained the webpage of the Placebrand Observer. This website aims to link academics and professionals from the place branding together.

 

Connecting to these official and already existing projects the third part of the workshop consisted of the presentation of the current status of their doctoral theses by the PhD students of the CAS research group.

In her final year of the doctoral thesis Sara Vinyals presented her PhD thesis titled "La construcció demarques de destinació fortes. La imatge de marca a través del web”

Also in her final year of the doctoral thesis Beatriz González presented her PhD work with the title “La construcció de marques de destinació fortes. La imatge de marca a través del web"

In her second year of the PhD and scholarship holder of the CAS research group Lorena de Ferrari presented her state of the art and PhD work called “Identidad visual en los destinos urbanos internacionales"

As the newest member of the group Jasmin Sera, in her first year of the PhD, presented her PhD proposal called “Culture, Identities and Nation Branding”

The workshop was finishedwith a closing speech moderated by José Fernandez-Cavia. Throughout the discussion with the visitors - amongst a guest from the Tourism Catalonia agency - and members of the CAS research group is was pointed out that most of the PhD projects focus on cities and not consider regions for example on their place branding proyects. In the future it will be necessary to study regional branding in order to improve the way regions attract tourism.
