On May 22nd 2017, CardioFunXion was in the "Jornada de Portes Obertes" of the "Open door day" of the Campus Universitari del Mar, UPF Barcelona.

In this full day event, children, families and students of all ages could visit the university campus and take part in the scientific dissemination activities that were prepared for them across campus. The interactive workshops consisted of explanations of applications in the areas of health and life sciences.

CardioFunxion students prepared a simulated visit to the cardiologist, where they could show the importance of image analysis in clinical practice. First, an short introduction was given to the circulatory system, the heart, and heart failure. The participants observed the cardiac anatomy and the cardiac cycle in echocardiographic recordings.

Then, a tool was prepared for them to segment the left ventricle and compute an estimate of the stroke volume, from the echocardiogram. Based on this measurement and several demographic parameters, the participants could investigate if the patient was suffering from heart failure or another pathology was suspected.
