COMPASS, new research project

Lobbying and Compassion: Interest groups, discourse and nonhuman animals in Spain

The Ministry of Science and Innovacion of Spain, through the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), have funded the research project COMPASS (Lobbying and Compassion: Interest Groups, Discourse and Nonhuman Animals in Spain) for the period 2021-2025. COMPASS aims to examine how interest group (lobbies, think tanks, etc.) may prevent compassion towards other animals from flourishing and developing in modern society. To this end, the discourse and strategies of interest groups in the areas of animal-based food, animal experimentation and entertainment using nonhuman animals will be researched for the Spanish case.

The project has as principal investigator Dr. Núria Almiron and includes UPF-CAE members Catia Faria, Eze Paez, Laura Fernández and Olatz Aranceta-Reboredo. The research team also includes other members from the Department of Communication of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Miquel Rodrigo and Jose A. Moreno), members from the Universitat de Barcelona (Fabiola Leyton and Daniela R. Waldhorn) and a group of researchers from the Marketing Department at Universitat Pontificia Comillas (Estela Díaz, Antonio Núñez and David Martín). Overall, the research team includes profiles from persuassive and strategic communication, communicaiton theories, marketing, psychology and ethics.
