Short biographical sketch

Fernando G. Benavides is Senior Professor at the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). He was trained in medicine (MD) at the University of Seville and received his PhD at the University of Alicante (with special mention). He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Liverpool (1980) and at McGill University (1995). Since 2010 he serves as Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health (Houston). In 2015 he obtained a CNPq Grant for a stay as Visiting Professor at the University of Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) for six months. Since 2009 Fernando Benavides has served as Director of the Centre for Research in Occupational Health (CiSAL), dedicated to research on health problems, occupational safety and health policy, vulnerable groups and information systems.

He has collaborated in research with Eurofound (Dublin), the International Labour Organization, the SRT from Argetina, the National University of Costa Rica (Heredia), the National University of Colombia (Bogotá), the University of Puerto Rico (San Juan), and the Organización Iberoamericana de Seguridad Social.

Dr. Benavides is currently the Director of the master degree program in Public Health at the Pompeu Fabra University. He teaches classes for the University Master Programs in Public Health, in Safety and Health at Work (UPC-UPF-UB) and in the undergraduate programs of Medicine, Human Biology and Labour Relations at the UPF.

Between 2010 and 2014 he was President of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) and since its foundation in 1999 and until 2006 he was editor-in-chief of Archivos de Prevención de Riesgos Laborales (currently in MedLine).

He has been a member of the advisory and editorial boards in several journals including the Occupational and Environmental Medicine, European Journal of Public Health, Gaceta Sanitaria, Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Author of more than 225 papers published in journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and director of 26 doctoral theses, the research lines focus on occupational health problems (injuries, musculoskeletal disorders and disabilities) and their relationship with the Welfare State and social security. I have the recognition of four six-year periods of recognized research (the last one 06/17/2015) and six five-year periods of recognized teaching (the last date 2014). According to the SCOPUS citation report, his publications has obtained an index-H = 35
