MARQUES BONET, TOMAS
Tomas Marques-Bonet is an ICREA Research Professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and head of the Comparative Genomics group at Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC/UPF) in Barcelona (Spain).
He received a Biology Degree at the University of Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain) in the specialization of Zoology and Ecology and PhD at the University Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain) in 2002, working on the impact of chromosomal rearrangements on the molecular evolution of primates.
During his postdoctoral period at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA) under the direction of Dr. Evan E. Eichler with a Marie Curie Fellowship from the European Union, he followed his research on non-human primate genomics and became interested in the evolution of primate genomes, especially centered on segmental duplications. In 2010 he got the ERC Starting Grant 2010 to establish his own group centered on the analysis genetic diversity in great apes.
He is part of many Genome Consortia (Neanderthal, Denisovan, Bonobo, Gorilla, Orangutan, Gibbon, Marmoset. Lynx, Cats, Melon), being the team leader in the section of duplications and structural variation in most of them.
