Lydia Repke

Academic and Professional Career

Lydia Repke is a researcher at the Research and Expertise Centre for Survey Methodology (RECSM) and develops her Ph.D. thesis under the supervision of ICREA Professor Dr. Verónica Benet-Martínez at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Barcelona, Spain. Her dissertation is entitled "Multiple Cultural Identifications, Personality, and Social Networks." This project aims to add to the adequate understanding of the acculturation processes affecting immigrants and their descendants by not merely focusing on individual characteristics, but by also including actual intercultural contact. In particular, Lydia explores the dynamic interplay between how bicultural individuals manage their multiple (and sometimes conflictual) cultural value systems and identifications, and the changes in their personal social networks. Social network analysis, cluster analysis, multiple regression analysis, agent-based modeling, and correction for measurement error are some of the applied methodologies. For her Ph.D. project she has been granted a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation.

Lydia has been involved in various research groups and projects at UPF: She used to be a member of the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Immigration (GRITIM). She also collaborated in the Survey Quality Predictor (SQP) project and the European Social Survey - DACE project. Further, she worked on the research project "Do You Feel Catalan As Well? Cultural Self-Identification(s) and Personal Social Networks of Immigrants and Their Second Generation" led by Prof. Benet-Martínez. Currently, she is a member of the Behavioral and Experimental Social Sciences (BESS) group of RECSM.

Lydia holds a M.A. in Political and Administrative Sciences from the Universität Konstanz, Germany (2011), and a M.Sc. for Research in Political Science from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona (2011). She received her B.A. in Political and Administrative Sciences from the Universität Konstanz (2009). During her studies in Germany, she worked as a tutor at the Chair of International Politics and as a research assistant at the Chair of Political Science and International Politics as well as at the Chair of Management, Especially for Strategy and Leadership. Further, Lydia was a visiting student at Boğaziçi Üniversitesi in Istanbul, Turkey (2008/2009).
