Why does our modern society need biomedical engineers?

The European Union framework programme for research and innovation has identified eight societal challenges. The first challenge is 'health, demographic change and wellbeing'. To cope with this challenge requires progress in fields such as medicine, biology, engineering, physics, information technologies, applied mathematics, to name only a few. However, to go beyond progress in individual scientific disciplines we need a solid interface that connects these fields and that grows along with their fast advance. This multidisciplinary interface is constructed by biomedical engineers.

Who is behind our Master?

We are a consortium of research groups at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies and the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences of the University Pompeu Fabra. Our aim is to host and mentor talented students not only during their master studies but potentially also for subsequent PhD studies. Our research groups are world renowned for their scientific contributions and are also at the vanguard of technology transfer. This excellence is reflected in outstanding quality of the content we are committed to offer to the master students. 

What educational approach does our Master take?

Our master clearly focuses on research projects. The numerous research publications by students of our master program show the success of this approach. Each student will be hosted and mentored by one of the research groups. We will take the background and interests of the individual students into account when assigning the student to a certain research group. The students will carry out their master thesis in their research group. Beyond that they will be embedded in the daily activities of these groups such as the participation in reading groups, journal clubs, or regular interaction with junior researchers and supervisors. The language of our master is 100% English.

What scientific approach does our Master focuses on?

Computational techniques in biomedical engineering are the main focus of our master. This comprises the quantitative analysis of biomedical images and signals as well as the modeling of living organisms and medical devices. Starting at the cellular level up to the level of whole organisms, the different analysis and modeling projects cover many different scales of biological organization.

Description: The main goal of this Master's degree is the study of computational techniques in the field of biomedical engineering. The students will acquire skills and knowledge needed to carry out advanced and interdisciplinary research projects. Our teaching involves classroom-based work but it is mainly characterized by flexible and personalized hands-on research training in a multidisciplinary research environment. The learning is mainly through work on selected research projects under the supervision of a senior researcher.

Who is it for? The Master is primarily designed for students with a biomedical engineering background. Students who have a different background (such as other engineering degrees, computer science, physics, mathematics, or life sciences) can also apply for the master. It is aimed at candidates who intend to pursue a research career in biomedical engineering.

Career prospects: The interdisciplinary training and research experience acquired through this Master prepare students for a PhD programme or research career in an academic or industrial research laboratory in the medical or scientific fields.

Additionally, there is the QUAES-UPF prize for the best master project: 

  • After the presentation of all master projects, the faculty members will select the best master project. The winner will receive a certificate and a 500 € prize-money awarded by the QUAES-UPF Chair for Computational Technologies for Healthcare (see https://www.upf.edu/web/catedra-quaes-upf)

 

Syllabus

Compulsory training activities

  • Data Science (5 ECTS, 1st trimester)
  • Research Methodology (5 ECTS, 1st trimester)
  • Research and Science Seminars (5 ECTS, whole year)
  • Master’s Degree Final Project (25 ECTS, whole year)

We put a strong focus on the research project of the student. Students are integrated into one of our research groups to carry out this project and to write the master thesis about it. This thesis project work is supervised by a senior member of the research group and accounts for 25 ECTS. The mandatory course 'Research and Science Seminars' of 5 ECTS serves to further strengthen the integration of the students in their research groups. Subject of this course are regular organized interactions between the master students and members of their research group, such as doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and senior professors. These interactions include the joined discussion of ongoing scientific projects of different group members as well as the discussion and analysis of scientific articles by others.
