BCN MedTech will participate in the 23rd Setmana de la Ciència

08.10.2018

The 23rd Science Week will take place from 9 to 18 November in Catalonia. During the Science Week various scientific outreach activities will be held in different parts of Catalonia: open days, exhibitions, lectures, games, scientific workshops among others.

Coordinated by the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació, the central themes of the activities are, on one hand, the cultural heritage, on the occasion of the celebration of the European Year of Cultural Heritage promoted by the European Union; the figure and work of Pompeu Fabra, on the occasion of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Catalan linguist and grammarian, a celebration promoted by the Generalitat of Catalonia; and the figure of the prestigious American physicist Richard Feynman, on the occasion of the celebration of the centenary of his birth, promoted by the Communication and Dissemination Group of Nanotechnology, EspaiNano.

For this occasion, BCN MedTech with the collaboration of the QUAES-UPF chair has organized two activities within the area of biomedical engineering.

On November 12 a workshop called "chicken wings, cauliflower and cactus in 3D cardiology" will be offered. This activity consists of knowing one of the most fascinating structures of the cardiovascular system, the left atrial appendage. To become familiar with this structure, several models printed in 3D will be presented, where the participants in the workshop should classify their shape according to four different categories, which will be presented previously. In addition, these geometries will be studied with computers through free access software for viewing 3D models. Examples of 3D lugs will also be printed. Likewise, the role of the left atrial appendage in the formation of thrombi that can degenerate in stroke will be explained.

On November 13, BCN MedTech will offer a workshop focused on learning how to make a wifi antenna. This workshop aims to introduce attendees in a world as sophisticated as that of the antennas and the propagation of waves in a very practical way related to a family service for all as is the WiFi. In addition, we also want to emphasize the number of applications that these tools can have, such as in the biomedical field where BCN MedTech is currently leading a project on the creation of an endoscopic tool for the detection of colorectal cancer.

Both activities will be carried out in the facilities of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and are aimed at ESO and Bachiller students and training cycles. To attend these activities, it is necessary to sign up in the following links. Places are limited:
