Alberto Santini (UPF) together with Gara Villalba (UAB) and Michael Schneider (RWTH) has been awarded a grant to start a pilot project which will bring vertical farming to primary schools in Barcelona.

Vertical farming is a way to grow herbs and vegetables indoors, on stacked shelves under controlled conditions. It can be used to increase the productivity per square meter of many crops, protect them from changing climate conditions and from pests (no pesticides and herbicides required), and bring their production closer to the place of consumption, so that crops need not be transported for many kilometers (saving CO2 and other nocive emissions).

The three researchers will start a pilot vertical farm in a primary school of the Barcelona area and will optimise its use to produce food, which will be used in the school's canteen.
