BARG hosts a session of the “Crazy about Sciences” program

The BARG group has taught one of the sessions in the mathematic course of the “Crazy about Sciences” program, talking about how mathematics can be used to help take decisions and improve the logistic area.

The “Crazy for Science” program is an initiative of the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera that offers different courses in collaboration with research centers and institutions of excellence at the international level in Catalonia. The mathematics course is developed jointly by the Federation of Entities for the Teaching of Mathematics in Catalonia (FEEMCAT) and the Catalan Society of Mathematics (SCM) and has the support and collaboration of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the UB, the Department of Mathematics of the UAB, the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics of the UPC, the department of Economia and Business of the UPF and the Center for Mathematical Research. The course is oriented to 1st and 2nd year high school students with special interest and talent by the mathematics. The basic aim is to encourage the scientific vocation of these young people and especially their enthusiasm for mathematics.

In the session "Mathematics helps logistics" given by the researcher of the Business Analytics Research Group Jessica Rodríguez-Pereira, students can realize on how mathematics has been used by many companies to help to improve several areas, and in particular the logistics area. In the session, to exemplify how the application of mathematics is useful for the decision-making process in the logistics of a company, the students faced two main problems in logistics: the supply chain design and the delivery routing problem seeing how it is possible to solve these problems and the implications for the business.
