Following our previous post on online celebrations for the Day of Europe, the BACES team also wants to highlight some  meaningful efforts to provide further online exhibitions over the recurrence of May 9 (Day of Europe).

As such, the two online events that we are proposing are:

1. Online Expo on the May 9, 1950 by the "Foundation Jean Monnet pour l'Europe"

70 years ago, Robert Schuman released his famous Declaration inspired by Jean Monnet, which marked the beginning of Europe as a community. To commemorate this event, the Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe is offering a small virtual exhibition, open to all, of a few original archive pieces linked to this event. A selection of documents from each country that will sign the Treaty of Paris in 1951, as well as from the United Kingdom and Switzerland. A tour of Europe through documents responding to what some newspapers then called "The Schuman bomb".

The expo offers an online map with markers pointing to the place of origin of documentary sources related to the Day of Europe.

2. "Europe and Europeans 1950>2020: 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration" by the Historical Archives of the European Union (European University Institute, Florence)

The exhibition “Europe and Europeans 1950 - 2020: 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration”,  sets out to raise awareness of the importance of the Schuman Declaration within the history of European integration, to stimulate reflection on its relevance in today’s Europe, and to encourage debate on the history of the European Union (EU) and its future.

It was considered as a presential explorative expo, but the materials are nonetheless online for the virtual visitor to download and observe.

The first path is guided by key sentences of the Declaration that give the title to five thematic sections. Through a selection of images and documents held in the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU), the visitor can experience some of the most relevant political, economic, social and cultural developments of the last 70 years of European history.

The second path allows for a meeting with people, as they were involved in or affected by the process of European integration, with a view to reflecting on what it means to be European in a dialogue between past and present.

Finally, the whole exhibition is enriched by a multimedia section through different QR codes that refer to audio and/or video material that can be streamed to your mobile phone.
