Workshop on Multilingualism

The ALLENCAM  Research Group  (SGR 2021 SGR 00472) and the Department of Translation and Language Sciences at Universitat Pompeu Fabra are pleased to host the 3rd MULTILINGUA Network Workshop taking place from March 6-7, 2025. This event marks the final workshop organized under the 2023-2025 MULTILINGUA Thematic Network (RED2022-134920-T MULTILINGUA: Network on Bi/Multilingualism in Spain, PI: Sílvia Perpiñán), funded by the Spanish Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación).

This workshop aims to bring together leading experts and early-career researchers exploring multilingualism from diverse perspectives, including linguistic, psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic, sociolinguistic, and educational approaches.

The central theme of this edition focuses on the impact of acquiring a second (L2) or third (L3) language on prior linguistic knowledge, particularly in bilingual contexts in which a minority language is present (e.g., regional bilingualisms). The workshop will feature a dynamic format, including plenary talks by invited speakers, research presentations from members of the MULTILINGUA network, and interactive discussion sessions.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is needed.

Key questions we will explore:

  • How does learning an additional language influence existing linguistic knowledge?

  • How vulnerable are minority languages in multilingual settings?

  • Do bilingual individuals have an advantage when learning a new language?

  • What role do sociolinguistic context and education play in additional language development?
