Abstract: Over the last twenty years, foreign language education has moved towards the active engagement of learners through Audiovisual Translation (AVT) tasks. The potential of AVT has been recognised by European institutions by funding research-led projects such as LeViS and ClipFlair. Scholars have focused on various strands of investigation on the topic (Lertola 2019; Talaván 2020). This paper presents TRADILEX (Audiovisual Translation as a Didactic Resource in Foreign Language Education) a recent I+D+i project funded by the Spanish Ministry of University and Research which involves Spanish and international universities. TRADILEX aims at consolidate the didactic use of AVT to improve foreign language learning as an innovative line of research in which the benefits of the use of audiovisual media, mediation and technology are combined. To this purpose, the project aims at determine the improvement in foreign language learning – mainly English as a Foreign Language – promoted by the pedagogical use of AVT. In order to enhance communicative competence in an integrated manner, a methodological proposal which includes complete AVT tasks (namely subtitling, subtitling for the hard of hearing, narration free commentary and audio description) has been developed. The methodology will be piloted with B1-B2 adult learners in non-formal educational contexts, particularly in the university language centers of the higher institutions involved. The quasi-experimental research aims to support the benefits of this type of methodology and set the basis for its integration in the foreign language curriculum. Among the main outcomes of the project there is the creation of an online platform where AVT tasks could be carried during as well as after the project and of a manual of good practices on the use of pedagogical AVT.
