Results of a teaching innovation project on Academic Integrity and Generative AI in the 2023-24 academic year

17.10.2024

During the 2023-24 academic year, TIDE led a teaching innovation project (funded by PlaCliK: E2023015714) that aimed to “model academic integrity” and shape how students make decisions about their use of Generative AI (GenAI) in university coursework.

The work of the project included: (1) producing an actionable course policy on GenAI usage in the form of a student learning agreement, (2) redesigning class activities and grading criteria to further scaffold responsible GenAI use, and (3) creating learning activities to introduce ethical issues related to GenAI. The approach was piloted in two courses:
1. Introduction to ICT: A compulsory course for all first-year students at the engineering school that takes place in the first trimester,
2. Learning Technologies: an elective course within the Cognitive Systems and Interactive Media (CSIM) masters’ degree that takes place in the second trimester.

The following materials are available as a result of the project:

1) A poster paper presented at an international conference:

Marc Beardsley, Ishari Amarasinghe, Davinia Hernández-Leo (2024) Toward a Learning Agreement for Generative AI Use: First-Year University Student Perspectives, Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Computer- Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), 401-402, Buffalo, USA

2) A preprint article:

Marc Beardsley, Ishari Amarasinghe, Emily Theophilou, Milica Vujovic, Davinia Hernández-Leo, A Learning Agreement for Generative AI Use in University Courses: A Pilot Study. TechRxiv. March 18, 2024. DOI: 10.36227/techrxiv.171078030.08340862/v1

3) We offer reusable course materials such as a survey and a student learning agreement for GenAI use. Some of the materials are being used now across faculties at UPF. Contact us if you are interested in a copy of the materials.

Additional work including a case study report and related academic publications are underway.
